Welcome to the Artizen Cafe Blog!
It only took 11-months to get this blog up and running, but here we are! It's been an incredible almost 1-year in our cozy cafe on North Wellington St, in Frankford and we can't thank everyone enough for the support, reviews, visits and positive energy. We're excited to bring you more great things!
We wanted to have somewhere other than our Facebook page, to share some stories, reminisce about past events or news etc... So now we have it!
The Artizen Cafe was designed with one thing in mind; A place people can go, relax, feel good and just "get away from it all" for a while. We're small, but that was by design. We want the feel to be warm and cozy, and not industrial, too loud or impersonal. We offer take out options if people not to stay, but if you do stick around for a bit, you may find yourself bumping into a friend, or having a conversation with a new one! That's the point of it all. Connection and positive energy.
Our other focus with our cafe, was to promote LOCAL products and people. We're very proud of our hometown of Frankford, and there is so much talent hiding around us, like stealthy coffee ninjas, it's incredible! That's why we have our little gift shop with local photography, crafts, art work and more. We are still working on a rotation of items since our space is limited, and as we build a rapport with local artists and photographers.
Our family is a fan of the arts in general;
-Myself (Derek), took drama all through high school and still love live shows, I love to draw and I am also a local musician. I admire paintings and art of all forms for the vibrancy, creativity and just plain old "wow" factor.
-My oldest daughter, Jade has become an incredible artist; she paints and draws. I remember back when we used to draw together when she was young. I was better than her once upon a time. But suddenly, she rocketed WAY beyond my talent level and it never ceases to amaze me. In fact, she's already sold a number of her art work at the cafe.
-My youngest, Amber has surprised me as well with her drawing, painting and creative talent. I'll find her in her room at times, watching "how to draw" videos on YouTube and she'll do amazing things. She often will draw things off the top of her head, that amazes me especially being only 10 years old. She's also involved in school plays each year.
-My wife (Shawna), has a big appreciation for the arts of all kinds. I would say her best art comes in the form of cooking many of the simple, recipes that are offered at the Artizen daily. She's loving doing it even more than she expected, and the reviews have been wonderful since it's not easy to find good homemade, fresh cooking around (including healthier options daily too!)
In particular, we've loved meeting artists who are just plain great people as well. We aren't necessarily looking for the best sounding musicians, or the world's most professional photography; We want those who are humble, full of positive vibes and who maybe are a little reluctant to get their talents/work out there and known. The Artizen Cafe is where we want to help get people started while feeling no pressure or discomfort.
We can't wait to meet more local artists, musicians, photographers etc... We've done some photography workshops at the cafe already, paint nights, live music and have plans for more great events that we can share with you on our new blog and the Facebook page.
